Hemmed In?

You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me.” Psalm 139:5

I recently read this Bible verse and it brought me back to a special place and time.  I was with my college roommate and we were backpacking the Buffalo National River. Our goal was to get to Hemmed-In Hollow Falls; a 210 foot waterfall that cascades over the rugged Ozark bluffs. However, the path to get to this hidden gem is very challenging.  Simply seeing our desired destination on a topographic map was intimidating, as the close lines illuminated its drastic elevation changes.  The route would be extremely steep and strenuous.

Hemmed-In Hollow Trail is challenging for even the most experienced hiker.  The warning message on our map read: “The hike to Hemmed-in Hollow is one of the most frequent Search & Rescue (SAR) locations at Buffalo National River. Steep and strenuous trail conditions, coupled with a hiker’s lack of preparation, can lead to dehydration, overexertion/exhaustion, and heat related illness.” I vividly remember sore shoulders from carrying my pack, sweating, panting, and taking frequent breaks along the way.  I also recall finally rounding the corner when we could see the falls. It was absolutely breathtaking!

Being “hemmed in” by God has many parallels to Hemmed-in Hollow.  As David in Psalm 139, the LORD protects His people.  Similar to the surrounding high bluffs, God shelters us on all sides. Like the cool stream at the foot of the falls, He also brings comfort and relief.  Although we may be weak or tired at times, the LORD is always with us to keep us and strengthen us. Isaiah 40:28-31 says “He does not faint or grow weary” and “gives power to the faint and increases strength to those who are tired.” Jesus promised that no one is able to snatch His people out of His hand. (John 10:28-29)

Are you hemmed-in by God?  Are you a child of God, born again?  Jesus said in John 3:3, “Truly, truly I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”  ”Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved” Acts 16:31   Read more here
